Why and how we built Genrank.

Genrank started in August 2024 with a very simple question:
Why do some brands appear in AI answers while others are ignored?

At the time, there were no real tools to measure or understand this. AI search was exploding, but brands had no way to see whether they were being recommended inside tools like ChatGPT. Traditional SEO tools were built for Google. AI answers were a completely different environment.

So we decided to build something for this new reality.

 

The first (slightly ridiculous) version.

The first version of Genrank was called Gentrack, and the only way to analyze AI visibility was by asking users to upload their exported ChatGPT chat archive.

Users had to go into their ChatGPT account, export their conversation history, download a large file, and upload it to our system. From there we would scan the conversations to detect brand mentions.

It technically worked. But it was about as user-friendly as assembling furniture without instructions.

Still, that early prototype proved something important: brands desperately wanted to understand how AI systems talk about them.

From experiment to platform.

Over the months that followed, the product evolved quickly.

We moved away from chat archive uploads and began building a real platform that could:

  • Track brand mentions inside AI answers
  • Monitor competitors appearing in the same responses
  • Analyze prompts that trigger recommendations
  • Help brands understand why they are (or are not) included in answers
  • Provide clear actions to improve visibility

 

The product was renamed Genrank in early 2025, and the focus became clear:
help brands understand and influence how AI recommends products, services, and companies.

The rise of AI search.

Search is changing. Instead of ten blue links, users increasingly receive direct answers from AI systems, leading to a hybrid search approach. Those answers often contain brand recommendations. For companies, this creates a completely new type of visibility.

Being mentioned in an AI answer can directly influence purchasing decisions. But until recently, there was no infrastructure to track or optimize for this. Genrank was built to fill that gap. 

Of course, in the span of a couple of months, literally hundreds of platforms appeared around the world, all trying to answer the same question companies were asking: “Am I visible in AI search?”

Many of these tools focused on a single metric: detecting whether a brand appeared in an AI answer. While that visibility signal is important, it is only the starting point.

A brand mention alone does not explain why an AI system recommends one company over another, what content signals influence that decision, or what a brand can actually do to improve its presence in future answers.

From the beginning, Genrank was built around a broader idea. Tracking visibility is useful.
Understanding why it happens and how to influence it is far more valuable.

Today, more than 2,000 brands use Genrank to monitor how they appear inside AI-generated answers.

Our platform helps companies track AI visibility across important prompts, monitor competitors appearing in the same answers, understand how AI describes their brand and identify content and reputation signals influencing recommendations.

The goal: to turn AI search into a measurable acquisition channel.

We believe conversational search will become one of the most important discovery mechanisms on the internet. Genrank exists to make that discovery process transparent – not as a replacement for SEO, but as a complementary layer that helps brands understand how they are represented in AI-driven discovery.
