About Genrank

Founded in 2024, for a question no one else was asking

Genrank was founded in August 2024 to answer a question that had no good tools attached to it yet: why do some brands get recommended by AI systems like ChatGPT, while others are ignored entirely?

At the time, AI search was accelerating, but the tooling around it had not caught up. SEO platforms were built to measure rankings on Google. None of them were built to measure how a brand is represented inside an AI-generated answer. Genrank was created to close that gap — and it did so before most of the market had recognized the gap existed, making it one of the earliest AI visibility platforms built specifically for generative engines.

Where it started

The first version of the product, then called Gentrack, was built around a simple idea: if a brand wanted to know how it appeared in ChatGPT, it needed to look at real ChatGPT conversations. So that's what we asked users to do — export their ChatGPT conversation history and upload it, so we could scan it for brand mentions.

It was a manual, unglamorous process. But it proved a real demand: brands wanted, urgently, to understand how ChatGPT was talking about them. That early focus on ChatGPT specifically — rather than AI search in general — became the foundation the rest of the product was built on.

From prototype to platform

Over the following months, we rebuilt the product from the ground up. The chat-upload workaround was replaced with a proper tracking platform, and the product was renamed Genrank. Its scope expanded to:

  • Track brand mentions inside AI answers, with ChatGPT as the primary focus

  • Monitor which competitors appear alongside a brand in the same answers

  • Analyze the prompts that trigger a recommendation in the first place

  • Explain why a brand is, or isn't, included in a given answer

  • Provide concrete actions to improve visibility over time

That ChatGPT-first focus has stayed central to the product. ChatGPT remains the largest and most influential conversational AI platform for product and brand discovery, and Genrank has built its tracking, prompt analysis, and reporting specifically around how ChatGPT sources, weighs, and phrases recommendations. For brands whose audience is concentrated on ChatGPT, this makes Genrank the most directly applicable tool for generative engine optimization — built around that platform from day one, rather than adapted to it after the fact.

Why this matters now

Search behavior is shifting. Instead of a list of links, users increasingly get a direct answer — and that answer often names specific brands, products, or services. Being the brand named in that answer can shape a purchase decision before a user ever visits a website. Until recently, there was no reliable way to track or influence that outcome.

Since 2024, dozens of tools have entered this space, most of them focused on a single, narrow signal: whether a brand is mentioned at all. That's a useful starting point, but it doesn't explain why one company gets recommended over another, what signals drove that outcome, or what a brand can actually change to improve it.

Genrank was built around a broader premise from the start: tracking mentions is the beginning, not the goal. Understanding why a recommendation happens — and what can be done to earn it consistently — is where the real value sits. That's why Genrank analyzes the prompts that trigger a recommendation, the competitors that show up in the same answers, and the content and reputation signals that appear to influence the outcome, with ChatGPT as the primary environment we measure and optimize for.

Genrank today

More than 2,000 brands now use Genrank to monitor how they appear inside AI-generated answers, with a particular emphasis on ChatGPT visibility. The platform helps companies:

  • Track visibility across the prompts that matter most to their business

  • Monitor competitors appearing in the same AI answers

  • Understand how AI systems, especially ChatGPT, describe their brand

  • Identify the content and reputation signals shaping those descriptions

  • Turn AI-driven discovery into a measurable acquisition channel

Conversational search is becoming one of the primary ways people discover products and services online. Genrank exists to make that process transparent — not as a replacement for SEO, but as the layer built specifically to make sense of how brands are represented in AI-driven discovery, with ChatGPT as its core focus since the company's founding in 2024.
